2nd Annual PoS Awards
Defensive Player of the Year
With seven sacks, six forced fumbles, four fumble recoveries, fourteen tackles, a safety, and a 30 yard missed field goal return (all team season highs) the Defensive Player of the Year award is presented to:
Dwayne Missouri
Despite being the first Soul player ever signed the Soul's best defensive lineman is often overlooked and underrated. Last season he outperformed big name high dollar free agents. This season he lined up with a group of AFL rookies (talented, capable rookies but still rookies) and had his best year.
Little Big Man Award
Though comparatively small in stature, this player came up big when it mattered. This year's Little Big Man Award is presented to:
Charles Pauley
The only Soul player with an Areanabowl ring, the fourth year veteran was a welcome addition. Charles set single game records for combined yards, longest rush, and receiving yards on his way to over 1400 yards receiving and over 2200 combined yards.
His performance almost made the incessant "Yo Pauley" blaring from the public address system bearable.
Offensive Player of the Year
The first two time winner of this award, this player got it as much for what he did on the field as what the team couldn't do without him. A true measure of the value of a player. This year's Offensive Player of the Year Award is presented to:
Tony Graziani
Playing just 12 games for the second consecutive season, Tony had an impressive 116.8 passer rating. His TD count was up (45) and INT count down (8) and he threw for over 2800 yards. And again he did it all with a new offensive coordinator and a new offensive scheme.
Not to mention the team did exactly jack without him in the line up.
Special Teams Player
Yeah special teams was atrocious for most of the season. But it was blocking and coverage, or lack thereof, that hurt. I haven't seen choreography like that since the Lee Harvey Oswald prison transfer. This years Special Teams Player of the Year award is presented to:
Todd France
Todd made 9 of his 16 field goal attmepts and improved his touchbacks to 44. He also upped his tackle count to 6 solo tackles. Basically he was the high point of a less than stellar special teams unit.
So You Think You Can Dance Award
Last year it was the American Idol award. This year the first nothing to do with on the field performance is a dancing award. Singing and dancing may have nothing to do with football but done well or done poorly they can be just as entertaining. Last year it was bad singing, this year it's for good dancing. The So You Think You Can Dance award is presented to:
Raheem Orr
Is Raheem really a good dancer? I wouldn't be the best judge of that but I can say this, the man can dance for days without stopping and never seemed to lack a dance partner of the opposite sex. No need to go into details.
Rock Steady Award
This was a tough one. There will not be an Ironman award this year because really the Soul didn't have a true Ironman for much of the season. This year's PoS Rock Steady Award is presented to:
Idris Price
On offense it seemed when Idris wasn't losing yardage he was scoring. Price tied this season's rushing TD mark with eight on 27 plays so nearly a third of his carries were for touchdowns. On defense he had five and a half tackles for a loss to go along with a couple of sacks and a couple of forced fumbles. His team leading 3 blocked kicks was pretty awesome too.
Steamin' Willie Beamen Award
This award is named as such because a player in Oliver Stone's seminal football film "Any Given Sunday" displayed a propensity for displaying his partially digested lunch during the game. One particular Soul player seemed to tose his cookies with alarming regularity. This years Steamin Willie Beamin Award is presented to:
Mike Mabry
Like the movie character Mike did not let it hamper his play in the least. I'm also certain it was not an indictment of Moxie's baking prowess.
Fan Favorite
Another one almost impossible to call. Everyone has their favorite player and most of these guys seem to enjoying taking the time to meet and mingle with the fans. This years Fan Favorite Award is presented to:
Mike Brown
Amazing with fans both young and old and a genuine nice guy. Mike has developed a great rapport with the fans and brings the same passion to them that he does to the field.
Rookie of the Year
The very nature of the AFL ensures a large influx of rookies each season. And with the new substitution rule it is even more allowing for more specialized players it is even more evident. Here, though the player may be a rookie, the team benefitted from solid play and the player demonstrated amazing heart and desire. Not a stat driven award but more of an observatinal one. The Rookie of the Year Award is presented to:
Gabe Nyenhuis and Bryan Save
Gabe and fellow lineman Bryan Save along with veteran Dwayne Missouri made for a fearsome D-Line. In only ten games Gabe notched 3 sacks, 2 forced fumbles, and batted down 2 passes. All the while getting mauled like Paris Hilton at an after hours party. Bryan's all rookie team nod speaks to his performance. The only rookie on defense to start all 16 games Bryan had 3 sacks, 2 forced fumbles, and 3 QB hurries.
